iPhone 3G getting the most out of OS 3.0

Seeing as there is new hardware and a load of new software features in the iPhone 3GS, I thought I'd try and see how I go improving the way I use my iPhone 3G.

Video Recording

I'm using Cycorder 0.9.6. I hex-edited the binary file so that there are no adds. It's a decent app but since the camera is mediocre the quality in Cycorder is mediocre as well. I believe Jay who wrote the app did a good job except he didn't make an easy way for you to transfer the videos off the device without the need for SSH or an iPhone browser. I am aware of being able share via wifi using Airshare that involves a symbolic link from Cycorders Video dir to the AirShare shared dirs.

Here are those instructions :
1. Use Cydia to install Cycorder.
2. Go to the Apple App Store and install Air Sharing.
3. Use Cydia to install Mobile Terminal.
4. Open the Mobile Terminal app and cd /private/var/mobile/Applications/.
5. Type ls -la to take a look at the installed applications. If you've only installed Air Sharing, it will be the first folder in the list. If it's not, check the other folders and when you find it, make a note of the folder name -- mine starts with 9DAAB941- (if copy/paste worked, this would be a great time to use it!).
6. Type cd ../Media to go up one folder level and into the Cycorder storage area.
7. Type mv Videos Videos.bak to move the default video store out of the way.
8. Type ln -s "../Applications/Air_Sharing_folder/Documents/Air Sharing/Public" ./Videos to create a symbolic link to the Public folder of Air Sharing for your videos. Replace Air_Sharing_folder with the name of the folder that you noted earlier.

Now when you record a video, you can use Air Sharing to manage and share them to anyone with a webdav client.

HomeButton

This is really handy, especially when you customize the double tap feature. I found the easiest way to get this sorted is to add the TouchFanatics repo to Cydia and install an app called 'Custom Home Button'. It installs a Homebutton option in your iPhone's settings.

The only down side is that to start a custom app you need to know what the bundle identifier is. This is usually found in the 'info.plist' in your applications directory.

Plist files are in XML format so you really don't need anything special to view the file, however you do need to use either ssh or an iPhone browser to access the file in the first place. You can also find it in iTunes or via the Net although this doesn't apply to Cydia apps obviously. Maybe the identifier is mentioned in Cydia also?

Stack

This app is by a developer called Stephen Troughton Smith. He's created this free Stack app for iPhone OS 2.x.x and his latest OS 3.0 compatible comes at a price. The price it costs is really up to you. I dropped a buck his way since I'm sure he'll end up selling it later for lots more on the AppStore. He replied back with the latest version and the instructions.

I installed it using mobile terminal although you can do it via ssh. It works great, literally bug free from what I can tell. Really handy to place your contacts icons in. I have the settings set to "Image" and "Always show Grid". It fans all my contacts out beautifully.

One Tap Dial Springboard Icons

I installed CallMe 0.8 from the iSpazio repo in Cydia. Quite easy to use and works quite well at creating the icons on the homescreen. I did have problems removing them using the app however. I ended up manually deleting the /Applications/Dialxx dirs which I didn't want and restarted the springboard. Use this with your Stack 3.1 Alpha 6c and you have a killer combo.

Voice Control

I installed NameDialer which I paid $1.19 for. It has a record on start feature and detects when you've finished speaking. I've assigned it to open when I doubletap my homebutton which is really convenient. I doubletap the homebutton, say contact at location and then it calls.

The only downside is that the iPhone OS 3.0 has screwed something up and now all voice dial applications are affected by the "Call xxx-xxx-xxx" dialog message where this never happened on OS 2.0. If that could be sorted and the NameDialer could be made skinnable then this app would be my top choice.

This message is soooo annoying!!!
